I did not agree with, but I was aware of the reason why the Westboro Baptist Church protested at the funerals of our military servicemembers. Why, exactly, are they planning on protesting the funeral of a nine year old girl ? Can there possibly be a valid reason ?

In my view, there is no valid reason.
The stated rationale is that the deceased (the 9 year old girl, soldiers killed in action, etc.) are evidence of God’s punishment against a nation which, in their view, endorses sin. They are focused on recognition of gay peoples rights and think that such public policies are offensive to God.
They appear to me to be vile and hateful, not Christ-like at all. But that is just my view.
Their contention (however warped it may be) is that all of the bad things that happen to Americans (soldiers, miners, 9 year old girls, etc.) is due to the American tolerance of homosexuality. They should be beaten with a hose.
