Hello,
I watched a movie A lonely Woman and in it is a single polish mother living with her son in the communist era. She makes ends meet and very tired/fatigued and barely has time to spend with her son because she is constantly working. Her son once asks her whether crooks get away with bad deeds. She replies that for every bad action there is a punishment. Her aunt dies and she is left with the funeral bill instead of a house (even though she has been the only one caring for the aunt) She meets an invalid whom she has a relationship. She steals the pensions that she delivers (as a postal office worker) in order to escape. They both plan to escape the dismal Poland and she leaves her son behind with a neighbor. They are in a car crash and they wind up in a hotel room where she yells to her boyfriend that she cant take her life anymore. He smothers her by sitting on her with pillows.
IS HER DEATH A PUNISHMENT OR LIBERATION?
I have to mix in realistic/philosophical elements which I do not understand.
I believe that it is a punishment but figuratively by dying she is liberated from her dismal and gloomy life in communism.
THANK YOU!!!!!

Well, that is interesting. I mean if you look into Communism just a bit, you will doubtlessly find testimonies to how unfathomably horrible it was/is to live under such a regime. So, yes, liberation. You might even have a text nearby with a similar idea that you could compare with the film you saw? That usually goes over well with essay graders (teachers).
Also what about when she was working hard and keeping to herself…being good, as it were. She got no reward. Her hardship could also be viewed as punishment. But for what bad deed? She seems not to be able to catch a break. Is that simply because of the communism she lives under? Is she a single mother? Does she catch any flack for that in a communist, but pretty Catholic Poland? Is she a statistic? I mean is this a common occurrence, do you think?
Then there’s the question of the man who killed her. Is he her liberator or her murderer?
What are the philosophical elements you have to work into the essay?
