Donating Blood And Other Things?

Ok I’m 17 and I want to help people I’ve always wanted to donate blood since i was like 13 and donate my bone marrow..I know it sounds a lot but i don’t want my friends or family to think i’m crazy…most of the people in my school who go like “help people bring peace” don’t do anything when something REALLY bad happens…and if instead of saying it why can’t we just do it..also want to give up my body for medical science …i don’t want my family to worry about funeral plans cause it’s a lot of money.
are my plans worth it? or is is something i will be regretting as i get older.

That sounds very admirable. You won’t regret it!

I think donating blood is a very good thing to do. But i personally think that if you donate your bone marrow, than that crosses the line, because then you’ll always feel a little dizzy, and feel like there’s something in your body that’s missing, you’ll feel kinda uncomfortable. But i totally think donating a limited amount of blood is a good idea. Don’t donate too much, if you do, then if something happens to you (an accident or something) and you need surgery, something that could happen is that you wouldn’t have enough blood in order to do the surgery.

Rebecca (2nd poster) your body regenerates blood. And because people donate blood, there is blood available if she needs it. And if you are a donor, you usually don’t get charged if you need a transfusion…you or your immediate family. It is very admirable and noble of you. Be sure to talk to your doctor before considering bone marrow donation however. It is not a very comfortable thing to go through. He needs to make sure you are healthy enough also. More people should act instead of talk. The world is full of blowhards.

It is obvious you have a big heart and should really consider a Jon I’m the health field. If you can give blood I say go for it! I was only able to give blood twice before they changed the regulations. I don’t weigh enough now to donate and I hate it.as fat as the body donation goes you really need to look into it. I think they only take people who have a medical condition that needs further study. Organ donation is another possibility to consider and will give life to many people.

You’re still young and yet you have done things that other people twice your age haven’t done or even attempt of doing. I salute you for that.
Donating blood and other parts of your body sounds good enough but donating your whole body when you die is a “huge” thing. As I’ve said you’re still young, you can think about it more as you age and you might want to consult your family and loved ones about it several times because they may think about it differently… You may not regret things but this may hurt your family the most…
Another thing, if you want to continue donating “everything” make sure that you take good care of yourself… Get your regular check up so you are sure that your health is not sacrifice while helping others.

Your plans are totally worth it. Blood donation is always needed. I know in my are we are having a shortage of blood, especially O-.
Bone marrow is a great thing to sign up for as well. I’ve been thinking of joining the national registry myself. I think too many people are scared of bone marrow donation. They don’t really take the marrow most of the time anymore. Now they harvest stem cells from your blood, so it’s as painful as a needle in the arm.
Donating your body for science is a huge help. Many doctors and undergraduates receive hands on training of anatamy from cadavers. I wouldn’t base the decision on saving your family money, though.
