I am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on private memorial or funeral services, does this cause hurt feelings to those not invited to attend and wondering if anyone has any experience with planning this type of service.

I think it’s kind of selfish UNLESS you also have a more public service as well. You’re basically telling everyone else that YOUR grief is more important than theirs so they can’t come to the service.
Having been to many funerals and even planned a few myself, I think it all depends on the situation. If the person was well liked and well known, have a public service. But if the person wasn’t well like, had a small family, etc, then have a private service. There are many options….you can do about anything you want. I recommend, if you wanted a private moment, having a public service, but make the burial private. It will give the family the final time they deserve.
